The U.S. Embassy in Namibia, Windhoek is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Information Assistant in the Public Affairs Section (PAS).
BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
Incumbent works under the supervision of Public Affairs Officer, drafts a variety of media outreach and information products, including press releases, media advisories, and fact sheets. Acts as Web Content Editor for the main Internet home page and the public affairs pages, and searches for and recommends new content to the Public Affairs Officer. Interacts with a wide range of contacts in the media, non-governmental organizations, and the Namibian government. Reports on media placements, both to the Embassy community and to the Department of State and affiliated agencies in the United States.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Applicants must address each required qualification listed below with specific information supporting each item. Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is not qualified.
EDUCATION: Undergraduate university degree in the humanities or social sciences
EXPERIENCE: Five years progressive experience in communications, media, journalism or the public relations field.
LANGUAGE: (Applicants will be tested as applicable):
Level IV fluency in written and spoken English required.
Level IV fluency in Afrikaans.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to work under extreme pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to adjust to rapidly changing priorities, including travel throughout Namibia. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to advocate U.S. policy to local press and other Embassy contacts.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Thorough knowledge of both U.S. and Namibian foreign and domestic policy issues and history. Expert knowledge of Namibian economic, social and political structures. Thorough understanding of public affairs processes, especially concerning the Namibian media and government regulation of the media.
